Trust.
I work very hard to build relationships with the students. I get to know them and pay attention (because middle school students are really tough, angsty and tough, hormonal and tough, whew...). I was put in a position today where a student had a meltdown. He felt like nobody was listening to his side of the story. The work I had done in getting to know him paid off. He trusted me enough to know I would listen to him. It didn't work out all roses or anything, but he was able to calm down because I heard his side of the story. That gives me a little confidence in my abilities and makes me feel pretty good about working where I do.
